RockTape, K-Tape: Is It Real or Just Unfounded Hype?
You can't miss it at a sporting event; the colourful tape is a common accessory for most athletes. It is known as kinesio-tape and is mostly worn on the arm, torso or the leg. RockTape is also kinesio-tape but just a specific brand.
While you might think it’s a fashion trend, to an athlete, it has a deeper meaning. It is a creation of a chiropractor almost four decades ago and stimulates proprioception, which means an athlete can know where the body is in space as they participate in any sports activity.
How Does K-Tape / RockTape Work?
Kinesio-tape is a flexible tape and is applied with a bit of stretch, which makes it unique and different to traditional rigid tape.
Being the largest organ in the body, the skin has many tiny sensory nerves, and when the tape comes into contact with it, the brain gets information regarding your motion. By tracking your movements, the brain ensures you do not get injured and helps with injuries such as back pain rehabilitation.
The tape can also improve an athlete’s balance, that can last for over 72 hours after you have removed it. It helps athletes who are in pain by preventing unnecessary falls that can worsen back pain or any other injury sustained during exercises.
Further, the tape is effective and better than postural workouts to reduce neck pain and give you a better posture. For some patients, it can be an easy solution for those in neck pain resulting from poor posture.
Should you use K-Tape / RockTape?
The tape doesn’t look like anything valuable and can be easily dismissed as a brace. However, the fact that it has medical and performance benefits, makes it valuable. It has the potential to limit injuries, provide better support and reduce pain.
